Historic Overview
The Battle of Blair Mountain (1921) was the largest labor uprising in U.S. history, where 8,000–15,000 coal miners clashed with private security, local law enforcement, and eventually federal troops in Logan County, West Virginia. The Battle was one of the first armed uprisings by laborers, but it occurred within a longstanding series of disputes between coal miners and mine companies. The miners were fighting for union rights, better working conditions, and to free imprisoned miners, but they were met with heavy resistance, including aerial bombings. The battle ended when federal troops arrived and forced the miners to surrender, but it marked a key moment in the labor movement despite the miners' defeat.
