Historic Overview
Tulsa in the early 20th century was a segregated Jim Crow town and was largely inhospitable to African Americans moving westward. Because of this, many Black settlers were forced from the main city center, and they settled to the north of the train tracks that ran along the upper border of Tulsa. Here they formed the neighborhood of Greenwood, a place that soon became to be known as “Black Wall Street.” Greenwood was a city within a city; Black citizens built a thriving and self-sufficient area for themselves separated from the white Tulsa. This created a tense relationship between Black Greenwood residents and white Tulsans, who were jealous and uncomfortable with the success of African Americans. This tension eventually erupted into the worst race massacre in American history, and despite being orchestrated by a white mob, Black Greenwood residents were deemed guilty of inciting the massacre.
