See history through a new lens

TrueFiktion comics help you show your students pivotal moments in U.S. history through the perspective of marginalized groups. Each comic illustrates lesser-known details of U.S. history, highlights the resilience of marginalized groups, and helps make history relevant to current social issues.

TrueFiktion comics make history more relevant, palpable, and engaging

  • Students get insight into current social issues by following the stories of fictional characters who demonstrate agency in dealing with racial, gender, and socioeconomic challenges throughout history.

  • We collaborate with illustrators to produce engaging, high-quality visuals highlighting the humanity and dignity of characters from marginalized groups.

  • Just like a play, poem or novel, a comic book will use a combination of narrative elements and plot structures. Each TrueFiktion comic book has a section that helps students understand and interpret the specific narrative techniques typically used in graphic novels.

  • Interviews with subject-matter experts and historians allow students to experience the difference between historical fiction and primary sources.

  • Supplementary educational exercises, activities, and practice problems reinforce and assess the learnings acquired while reading TrueFiktion comics.

  • We provide content-specific professional development in documents and webinars so teachers can quickly introduce the book in their curriculum.

Co-design a new historical comic

If you can’t find a story that suits your district’s specific needs, we can co-design one with your school. This highly engaging process involves working with your students and teachers to create a historical comic book and curriculum that features a local story with national significance. It is a unique way to ensure your students see themselves represented in their learning material.
