Joe’s Last Stand focuses on the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, which was the largest labor uprising in U.S. history. 8,000-15,000 coal miners clashed with private security, local law enforcement, and eventually federal troops in Logan County, West Virginia. The Battle was one of the first armed uprisings of laborers. They were fighting for union rights, better working conditions, and to free imprisoned miners, but were met with heavy resistance, including machine guns and aerial bombings. Despite the miners’ eventual surrender, the Battle of Blair Mountain was a key moment in the labor movement.
